Nerve for real-time virtualization of control

Nerve is an open industrial edge computing platform that helps to consolidate all kinds of machine software onto a single platform, including critical machine-control functions for CNC mills, multi-axis robots, and other precision machinery.

With Nerve's Edge Hosting module, control logic can be moved from dedicated PLC hardware to standard industrial PCs, where it can run safely in Docker containers and virtual machines alongside other applications.

Nerve integrates the open-source ACRNTM hypervisor as a basis for real-time virtual machines. It reduces costs and resources and offers key features necessary for running real-time control in a virtualized environment: low latency, maximum jitter reduction, fast boot time, responsive hardware communication, and optimized real-time performance.

The whitepaper provides an overview of the results of TTTech Industrial's test series to benchmark the real-time performance of ACRNTM on Nerve. These tests were conducted on standard Intel Atom-based industrial PCs and show how the combination of ACRNTM and Nerve provides a stable platform to run critical machine-control programs/real-time tasks in a virtualized environment without sacrificing real-time performance.
